 Demographic Growth: Extending over an area of 4551 sq. km. (5.1% of the area of the state), presently the Municipal area is over 13.81 .sq. km. the district had 17,79,805 persons (4.0% of population of the state) according to 1971 census. During 1981 census this figure went up to 20,94,756 persons. Decadal growth rate of population for the district had been 35.55 during 1951-61, and 23.07 during 1961-71 and 17.95 during 1971-81. Present population of this town as per 2001 census is 34038.
